Tips

Put your front foot under the bolts, in the middle of the board, how you feel comfortable

1 / 13

Put your back foot in the middle of the tail

2 / 13

Apply some pressure on your toes, but do not lean forward too much

3 / 13

Look slightly in front of your board, because this is where you will land

4 / 13

Scoop the board straight behind you, perpendicular to your board

5 / 13

Delay the 'scoop' motion slightly from the 'pop' motion. Push down first and then backward to release the snap, not diagonally

6 / 13

Make sure the tail touches the ground, it is very tempting not to. Put all your weight on your back foot

7 / 13

Jump slightly forward when you scoop, because your board will end up in front of your starting position

8 / 13

Stand up straight as you jump to compensate your leaning forward

9 / 13

Lift your front foot and make sure it does not touch the board. The entire rotation comes from the back foot

10 / 13

Keep your front foot ahead when you jump, it will guide the landing

11 / 13

Your back foot moves in front of you as well after scooping, as it lifts upwards

12 / 13

Catch the board with your front foot when you want to stop the rotation

13 / 13

Mistakes

'My board goes in the opposite direction I am rolling'

'You are missing the pop, which ends up being a pivot. Take the time to push down and make sure your tail touches the ground'

1 / 6

'I land behind my board'

'You are slightly pushing the board forward, which is a natural behaviour for this trick. Just jumping a bit forward will fix this issue'

2 / 6

'My body turns frontside'

'You are either turning your shoulders, or not scooping enough and trying to land it anyway. Keep your shoulders square, scoop hard, and let the board come back to you'

3 / 6

'The board flips'

'Don't hang off your back toes if you are doing so. You are either using your front foot without noticing, or scooping diagonally. Lift your front foot straight up, and push down before moving backward with your back foot'

4 / 6

'I slip out when I land'

'You are landing with your feet too close to each other. Focus on spreading your legs while in the air, before landing'

5 / 6

'I often need a pivot at the end, or I kind of fall forward'

'You are either not scooping backward enough, or leaning forward. Stand upright, jump a little forward, and scoop a bit harder'

Helpers

Muscle memory

Stand behind your board, with your front foot on the ground, and practice the scoop motion with your back foot, with no intention to land the trick

1 / 6

Snow board simulation

Try the backside shuvit with a board that has no wheels, as it is easier to slide on the ground. The feeling is not quite the same as the reel trick because you will miss the pop

2 / 6

Grass simulation

Try the backside shuvit on grass. This helps if you are scared of the trick. The feeling is not quite the same as the real trick because you will miss the scoop. On the other hand, you will have a better balance without moving

3 / 6

Hold a rail

Practice the shuvit while holding onto a handrail for support. This allows you to spend more time in the air, and helps keep your shoulders square. This also prevents you from falling

4 / 6

Tail slide simulation

Try the backside shuvit off a curb, as if performing a backside tail slide. This helps with sliding the board without needing to pop it. Choose a low curb, the board might flip from a higher one

5 / 6

Jump up on stairs exercice

Face a stair set, scoop the current stair with your back foot, and jump onto the next one with your front foot. The last stair will be your board, waiting for you. Once on it, do a pop shuvit

6 / 6

Variations

The lower your front foot is, the higher your board goes, but the less control you have. You can lift your board vertically for height, control and style

Transition

You can let your back toes hang off the board and pull your foot back without making the tail touch the ground. This will help you get your shuvit rotation, but you will have no pop
